Calculating Speaker Impedance

Impedance Totals in Ohms for
Sets of Voice Coils in Parallel

For two coils:
at 1 ohm = 0.5
" 2 ohms = 1.0
" 3 ohms = 1.5
" 4 ohms = 2.0
" 6 ohms = 3.0
" 8 ohms = 4.0

For Three coils:
at 1 ohm = .333
" 2 ohms = .667
" 3 ohms = 1.00
" 4 ohms = 1.33
" 6 ohms = 2.00
" 8 ohms = 2.66

For Four coils:
at 1 ohm = .25
" 2 ohms = .50
" 3 ohms = .75
" 4 ohms = 1.0
" 6 ohms = 1.5
" 8 ohms = 2.0

As a general rule, it may also be observed that dual voice coils allow series connections to double the impedance, while parallel connections half the total, all at the full rated power. Using just one coil permits only half the rated power to be safely applied.
